St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-3 – MLB Update
The St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, April 08, beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-3 to win the three-game series 2-1. The Brewers who had won the last game 6-0 seemed to have lost their shine, allowing the Cardinals to overwhelm them with an emphatic victory.
Lance Lynn, who was being seen as the potential substitute of Chris Carpenter, proved his choice right for the team, pitching 6.2 innings, to concede only two hits and a run with 1.35 ERA.
"It's still early, so hopefully I can build off what I did today and keep pitching well," Lynn said. "Hopefully it gives us confidence that with Carp out for the time that he's out, we can still win ballgames, and they have confidence in me."
Randy Wolf of the Brewers, gave up three runs in his 5-inning spell as the St. Louis Cardinals hitters kept the momentum up for an unstoppable offence. Rafael Furcal, the effective Cardinals shortstop scored two runs in five at-bats, while Matt Holliday had two runs to his credit with four at-bats.
Shane Robinson went for three hits and two runs in his five at-bats while Carlos Beltran, Matt Carpenter and Erik Komatsu scored a run each to take up the Cardinals lead up to nine, making the team’s victory possible.
Marco Estrada of the Brewers pitched two innings, allowing two runs coupled with that of John Axford who also allowed two runs while Tim Dillard and Kameron Loe allowed a run each in their respective innings.
Mitchell Boggs allowed a run, while Jason Motte, coming at the end, allowed a run to close the game with 9-3 for the Cardinals.
Sunday’s game had Lynn as the potential contender for the bigger games ahead. "We know what (Carpenter) brings to this team," team manager Mike Matheny said. "But when the game deals you what it deals you, you hope somebody steps up."
With the 2-1 defeat in the series, the Milwaukee Brewers will now face the Chicago Cubs on Monday. It will be interesting to see if the Brewers the upper hand there.
