St. Louis Cardinals edge Cincinnati Reds 1-0 – MLB Recap
St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 in the third and final game of their three-match regular series encounter on October 3 at Busch Stadium in Missouri.
"I'd say Shelby looked terrific, He came out there against very good team and lineup. It was pretty impressive what he was able to do," manager Mike Matheny said.
Cardinals’ pitchers played beautifully and earned a great victory against the Reds’ batting line-up. They all played as one unit and held the Reds’ with great force and eventually rattled them with ease.
Cardinals’ starter and relievers played well and showed their true class. Shelby Miller pitched six solid innings and received one hit only. He struck-out seven while he remained persistent on 1.32 ERA.
"I tried to gather myself and put together a quick game plan," Miller said.
Miller was the one pitcher, who started the game for the Cardinals’ on a high note and did not allow any chance to the Reds to bounce back in the game. Though it was a low scoring game, but still his contribution was needed to oust the Reds.
Relief pitcher Sam Freeman also played well as he pitched one inning and received only one hit. He did not give any run but remained consistent 5.40 ERA.
Closer Victor Marte also did well on his one inning spell. He received one hit and struck-out one Reds’ batter on his 4.91 ERA.
"I was actually glad the first guy got a hit so we could get that whole mess done with, I just went out there tried to get my work in still keep the competitive feel. The most I was going to go was five (innings). It was almost a tune-up, but you can't think of it as a tune-up until you are done," Reds' starter Homer Bailey.
On the other hand, the Reds' pitchers despite doing well could not save the game for their team. They received one run in total eight innings which proved disastrous in the end as it could not help them saving the game from the Cardinals.
