St. Louis Cardinals edge Houston Astros – 4-3 – MLB Recap
The St. Louis Cardinals bounced back in the second game and defeated the Houston Astros 4-3 in their three-match regular series encounter on Wednesday, June 6 at Minute Maid Park in 2012 Major League Baseball season.
Second baseman Daniel Descalso played well when the Cardinals were much under pressure. He drove for single run and maintained his .382 hitting average giving his team a clear advantage over the Astros lame pitching offence.
"I honestly didn't think they were going to send him there with no outs, but I looked up and he was (rounding) third and I just fired to home, I put it right on the money." Descalso said after the game.
Later Cardinals’ manager Mike Matheny also appreciated Descalso’s game and the way he showed his class. He not only told the media about Descalso’s good performance, but he also told them about the different aspects of his brilliant play.
"Incredible play, Turned around -- pretty much a blind throw -- and Yadi there for the tag. Obviously, that was the game."
Starter Adam Wainwright also played well for the Cardinals as he pitched 5.2 innings and received only three runs. He also received only seven hits and struck out eight Astros batters. Maintaining his 4.97 ERA, Wainwright was the only player from the Cardinals’
who stood firm against the Astros batting offence and eventually earned a great win for his team.
"It's kind of a head-scratcher really because I was getting ahead pretty good tonight and I did a poor job of putting guys away early, A lot of people I ended up getting out, but on 2-2 and 3-2 counts." said Wainwright.
St. Louis took early lead in the very first innings. They made three quick runs and kept their opponents trailing. Though in the bottom sixth, the Astros did able to bounce back with three runs, but at the same time, the Cardinals strengthened their pitching
offence and stopped Houston to continue their late run.
In the meanwhile, despite winning the latest game against the Astros, the Cardinals are still behind at third position in the National League Central with 29-28 win loss along with .509 winning percentage.
