St. Louis Cardinals edge Miami Marlins 8-7 at Marlins Park – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals edged Miami Marlins 8-7 at Marlins Park in Miami on Monday, June 25 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Despite putting up a strong fight on Monday evening, the Marlins failed to end up on the winning side. They will be looking to regroup themselves to turn the tables on Cardinals in the next game.
Marlins scored in the third and the fifth to take a crucial 2-0 lead. David Freese made the most of scoring opportunities as he scored on a passed ball in the seventh to bring the Cardinals back into the contest.
Miami used their home conditions to great effect and they scored four runs in the seventh inning to establish complete control over the contest. However, the Cardinals did not give up as they came back from behind to secure a memorable victory.
Allen Craig hit a sacrifice fly to right and Yadier Molina homered to left in the bottom of the ninth to level the score 6-6. Rafael Furcal broke the tie in the extra inning with an RBI double to stun the Marlins.
"I was the most nervous I could be and I was like, `Man I might come up in a situation where I'll actually have to hit,’" Cardinals’ starting pitcher Joe Kelly said.
"We've been told when he came up that he was probably going to be one of our hitters on the pitching staff," Cardinals’ manager Mike Matheny said in a post game interview.
"Unbelievable," he further added. "Through some crazy stuff, guys getting out of jams, it was a great effort."
The 2011 World Series Champions showed great determination, fighting abilities and courage in a game that turned out to be a thriller. Handling their nerves absolutely brilliantly, the Cardinals secured a narrow 8-7 win on Monday to improve their record
to 39-35.
Right now, St. Louis is occupying third place on the National League Central Division standings table and they will be eager to bring consistency in their results to win their second straight World Series title. The Marlins will be looking to improve their
performance and become competitive as they face some of the top teams in the League.
