St. Louis Cardinals edge past Chicago Cubs 5-2 in the first game of their four-match regular series encounter on Monday, June 17 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Cardinals’ hitters and pitchers played terrifically and never gave any chance to the Cubs’ throughout the game and eventually won the game in style.
“He did a great job, Had little warning there that his calf had tightened up we didn't know exactly what we were dealing with. We found out it's just cramp. He should be fine,” said St. Louis manager Mike Matheny.
Right fielder Carlos Beltran scored two early runs on his three at bats. He played confidently on the plate and maintained his slugging percentage at .535.
“It's tough for the team, We're scratching and clawing trying to get everything we can right now and trying put together quality ball games. We're falling little short right now, but it's a good group of guys,” Wood said after the game.
Left fielder Matt Holliday also played well and scored one run on two hits. He batted four times and remained consistent on his .445 slugging percentage.
Catcher Yadier Molina not only played confidently behind the plate but he also performed well on the plate with his two RBIs and two hits on his four at bats.
“Next question, I'm glad we got the win for Shelby (Miller). At the same time, he pitched pretty good, He beat us in Chicago, Tonight, we executed pretty good,” Molina said when asked about leading the league in hitting.
Along with batters, the Cardinals pitchers also performed tremendously and played a key role in their team’s win.
Starting pitcher Shelby Miller pitched five innings and allowed no run on two hits. He struck out five Cubs hitters on his consistent 2.08 ERA.
Not only Shelby but Cardinals first three pitchers did not allow any run. They pitched in right areas and helped their team win a good first game of the series.
Later Relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal pitched 0.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits. He also allowed one earned on 1.82 ERA.
