St. Louis Cardinals edge past Kansas City Royals, 9-8 – MLB Update
The batters of the St. Louis Cardinals were solid throughout the game and scored on a regular interval to give the Cardinals a 9-8 victory against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City on May 22.
The first two innings passed without score for both teams, as the pitchers threw the ball in perfect areas to restrict the scoring of the batters. In the third inning, the Cardinals added three runs while the Royals posted one run. Daniel Descalso doubled
to right-field and Yadier Molina scored the first run for the Cardinals.
Allen Craig hit a one-run homer (402 feet) to left-centre field and Descalso posted the third run of the first inning. Mitch Maier scored one run for the Royals when Alex Gordon drove a double-run shot off to deep left-field. The score-card moved to 3-1
at the end of third inning. The Cardinals stepped on the gas during the fourth inning as the batters contributed three runs.
Lance Berkman and Colby Rasmus posted two runs on the triple-run shot of Molina while the third run was taken by Yadier on the throwing error of the Royals’ first baseman Eric Hosmer. The Cardinals went ahead 6-1 after the fourth inning. Rasmus said, “A
couple of (at-bats) they didn't give me nothing, really. And a couple of times I battled off some tough pitches. They threw me some good pitches and I battled them to a walk.”
In the fifth inning, both sides posted two runs jointly. Tyler Greene posted one run for the Cardinals on the grounder of Matt Holliday to short-stop position. On the other side, the Royals cut-off their deficit to 7-2 at the bottom of the fifth when Mike
Aviles drove a shot towards the infield and Maier scored his second run of the game.
The Royals’ batters accelerated their team effort by posting three runs in the sixth inning. Jeff Francoeur homered (391 feet) to right field, Wilson Betemit struck a homer (405 feet) off the right-centre and Billy Butler singled to complete a three-run
campaign. After the sixth inning, the Royals were trailing, 7-5.
The game was tied 7-all when Gordon hit a home run (438 feet) to right-field and Francoeur made a single run on the drive of Betemit. No score was added during the eighth and ninth inning so an additional inning was given to both sides. Tyler Greene and
Albert Pujols scored two runs in the 10th inning for the Cardinals while the Royals’ Butler was able to put only one run on the score-board.
The game was ended with 9-8 in the 10th inning and it seemed to be the batters’ day as the pitchers were expensive.
