St. Louis Cardinals edge past San Francisco Giants 6-4 in Game 1 of NLCS – MLB Recap
St. Louis Cardinals edge past the San Francisco Giants 6-4 in Game 1 of National League Championship Series on Sunday, October 14 at AT&T Park in San Francisco, California.
Cardinals’ upfront pitchers and batters played tremendously and proved too good for the Giants.
"I think that's been very much of a strong suit for us all season, And it's a beautiful thing when these guys trust themselves when they get to two strikes. They can be a little more selective early in the count then they're not going to panic when we do get to two strikes. I give the guys a lot of credit," first-year manager Mike Matheny said on his team’s performance.
Cards played together and as one unit during the entire game which eventually landed them a good victory early in the NLCS seven-match encounter.
Centre fielder Jon Jay scored one run and smashed one hit along with one RBI on his five at-bats. He showed his class and kept the Giants’ pitchers under pressure. He played really well and maintained his slugging percentage at .200.
Right fielder Carlos Beltran also supported his team with his one run and one hit along with two RBIs. He gave early thrust to the Cardinals and remained consistent on his 1.000 slugging percentage.
“Right now I'm really enjoying myself, Right now I'm seeing the ball well. I feel like I have a good approach at the plate, I feel like I'm not trying to do too much, good things are happening," Beltran said.
Catcher Yadier Molina and third baseman David Freese also played well and scored one-run a piece. Freese contributed with a crucial RBI which ultimately proved to be the difference in game one of ALCS.
Along with batters, the Cardinals' pitchers also performed well and earned a great victory for their team. They all pitched in right areas and did not allow the Giants’ batters to score.
Starter Lance Lynn started for the Cardinals as he tossed 3.2 innings and received four runs and five hits. He struck-out three and showed his true offensive game.
