St. Louis Cardinals extend Jason Motte's contract – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals finally got their reliever, Jason Motte, signed for another year on Wednesday, January 25. The contract which is said to carry $1.95 million for the experienced player will certainly reinforce the defensive strength of the team.
St. Louis Cardinals, which are the current Champions, have undergone a few changes ever since they won the 2011 World Series finals. The biggest change that came their way was the announcement of retirement by the former manager Tony La Russa.
After that, in a move that was incredibly surprising, one that the Cardinals will probably have not thought about initially was the departure of slugger Albert Pujols. The player signed a multi-million dollar contract with the Los Angeles Angels.
Nonetheless, the club has tried to focus on the players whose contract need renewal, or who may become free agents after the season. Motte is one of the players whom the Cardinals have put their focus on.
While the deal has not been finalised yet, there were reports that Jason Motte had demanded $2.4 million, while the St. Louis Cardinals made an offer of $1.5 million. However, a virtual compromise finally was achieved through the deal.
Although not much has been disclosed about the deal officially by the team, the end result is certainly more than satisfying for both the team and the reliever himself. Jason Motte had a wonderfully successful season the last time when the team won the World
Series.
The reliever had a lot to offer the team with his performance. If nothing else, the fact that he saved nine crucial games serves as evidence of the capability he has. But what remains significant here is the fact that he outrivaled every competitor in the
postseason.
Motte had 12 appearances, pitching 12.1 innings, saving five of them for the club with an ERA of 2.19. His career ERA stands at 2.92 with 12 saves to his credit and 13 wins that he has had throughout the years. The Cardinals will be looking for Motte to
provide some impetus to their rotation before the upcoming Spring Training session begins.
