St. Louis Cardinals fight back to rekindle competition in World Series – MLB Update
National League Championship Series’ Most Valuable Player and St. Louis Cardinals’ slugger David Freese proved his mettle yet again in the postseason, at the biggest stage this time, bringing the Redbirds back in Game 6 with a two-out triple in the ninth
inning before winning it for the team 10-9 against Texas Rangers in the 11th inning with a walk-off home-run down centre-field at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.
Earlier, the Cardinals dropped Game 5 of the World Series because of a bull-pen mix-up, but manager Tony La Russa kept his team’s morale high to force a win in Game 6 and push the Fall Classic to Game 7 for the first time since 2002.
Out of the last 13 teams that won Game 6 at home to push the seven-game series to the finale, 12 teams went on to bag the crown. Statistics are now favouring the Cardinals, but it will be sympathetic for the Rangers to lose from this position.
The Rangers lost in five games to San Francisco Giants last year and have been pushed to the limit by the Cardinals this year again. The players have performed exceptionally, but it has been luck that has halted their progression in this year’s edition.
Prior to this, the Rangers have never won a World Series and their pennant last year was the first in the 51 year history of the franchise. They lived up to their vow of returning to the World Series, but it still remains to be seen if there is any change
in fate for the American League Champions.
The Cardinals trailed five times in the game, but a resilient line-up did not give up on the effort and fought till the end. After going 0-for-16 prior to this game, Jon Jay finally connected one in the ninth inning to inject impetus in the line-up, before
Freese drove in a triple to level the game at seven-each in the ninth.
La Russa finally had a sigh of relief after the game, especially after the infamous incident of Game 5. It will now be interesting to see how both teams approach Game 7.
