St. Louis Cardinals hope Jon Jay is considered for Gold Glove Award – MLB News
St. Louis Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny on Thursday, August 23, named Jon Jay as the potential and worthy contender of the Gold Glove Award this season. The centre fielder has attracted immense attention with his exceptionally amazing performance this year so far.
Earning name and repute for the marvellous defensive edge over other contemporaries, especially the youngsters, Jay has been instrumental in bringing force to the Cardinals. The 2011 World Series champions are currently surging in the National League Central with back-to-back series wins.
Jon Jay’s performance, therefore, cannot go unnoticed as fall’s Gold Glove Award voting is around the corner. The Cardinals now have less than 40 games to play before the regular season ends and the playoffs kick off.
"If you're just talking about the impact defensively that a player has made, I just can't imagine that anybody has had more of an impact than he has," Matheny said. "I'll lobby for him whenever I can, because I have been more than impressed."
Other front-runner contender for the Award is none other than the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen, a competitor who can offset anything any time thanks to his equally amazing performance for his team.
But backing Jay is his team manager who – like stated above, will lobby for him as he is impressed by the player’s game-play and committment on the field.
The two factors that can potentially affect the player’s ability to get the Award is the fact that he had a shoulder injury and the fact that Gold Glove Award is now handed out separately to right, centre and left fielders.
All said, nonetheless, it is Mike Matheny who will be lobbying for him.
"He's made enough good plays that have gotten national attention, too, that I think people are going to take a look at the statistics," Matheny said. "I just have a hard time, as you go through the league, [finding] many guys who are better."
With .316 average this season in 80 games, the 27-year-old player will be the centre of attention once the likely contender and winner’s name for Gold Glove is announced.
