St. Louis Cardinals hope to continue success – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak expressed his optimism on Tuesday, February 14, that the club will continue to succeed this year as well. His comments came a few days before the initiation of Spring Training at a time when a number
of individuals who helped the Cardinals win the last year’s World Series Championship are no longer there.
"[After] everything we've experienced and all of the turnover we've had ... trying to get down to Jupiter is something we're all looking forward to," general manager John Mozeliak said. "I think there is a lot of optimism and hope that things will continue
to be successful.”
At least three of the legendary figures that always featured prominently in the Cardinals went their own way after the end of a dazzling year. Tony La Russa announced his retirement having won the second title.
Albert Pujols, who had remained attached to the team for almost a decade, signed a ten-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels to depart. While Dave Duncan, the accomplished pitching coach, is away attending his ailing wife.
Despite the unanticipated and monumental changes, the determination to defend the title and to be a strong unit, remain supreme. That the club sets precedent in doing things in the most professional manner is a fact unchallenged.
The Cardinals might not have anticipated the departure of all three gigantic figures. However, they did have replacements available, envisaging a team that will not fall short on any front. Bringing Carlos Beltran to somehow replace Albert Pujols, Mike Matheny
to be an alternative for the former manager Tony La Russa and Derek Lilliquis for Duncan proves this fact.
“The thing I like most [about the team] is that it's balanced. I think it's athletic. I think it's versatile. That's proven to be a pretty successful recipe for us."
Despite the changes that have come the Cardinals way, the defensive and offensive makeup of the team will be looking to help overcome any hurdle once the season kicks off and to defend the title that the club won the last year with their brilliant victory
over the Texas Rangers.
