St. Louis Cardinals humiliate Houston Astros 8-0 – MLB Update
Chris Carpenter pitched a complete shut-out on Wednesday, September 28 to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 8-0 at Minute Maid Park.
Carpenter got his 15th shut-out of his career to also win the three-game series by 2-1.
Having 11 wins this season; Carpenter has maintained an ERA of 3.45 in the 34 games he has played with 243 hits that he allowed and 91 earned runs with 191 strike-outs to his credit. He has constituted an important part of the Cardinals since the 2011 season.
In his nine innings spell, Carpenter allowed only two hits with 3.45 ERA compared to 4.46 of

Brett Myers who gave up 10 hits and allowed seven runs in his five innings, having only three strike-outs, as opposed to 11 of Carpenter.
The St. Louis Cardinals’ offence sprang into action when Myers came to pitch the very first inning. Albert Pujols went for a single while Lance Berkman singled to right to double the lead for the Cardinals.
David Freese also doubled, as Skip Schumaker and Nick Punto had their individual singles in the 7-hit five-run first inning that put the Cardinals on the right track. Carpenter threw pitches that seemed beyond the Astros’ hitters to play.
Carpenter himself added a run in the second inning for the team by singling to right, taking the lead to 6-0 for the Cardinals. Skip Schumaker drove in another single in the top of the fifth inning to place the team in a comfortable position with a 7-0 edge.
With Carpenter effectively keeping the Astros’ hitters at bay, Allen Craig homered to right at the top of the ninth inning to make it 8-0 for the Cardinals. Lance Pendleton allowed two hits and a run in his only inning.
With the series standing tied and with the lead in the game in their favour at 8-0, the Cardinals kept Carpenter unchanged. He threw a shut-out ninth to wrap up the game with an 8-0 victory for the Cardinals to also win the series 2-1.
