St. Louis Cardinals kick off road trip with series opener against Cincinnati Reds – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny on Friday, August 25, expressed his excitement over the road trip that kicked off with the game against the Cincinnati Reds. Currently standing second in the National League Central ranking, the Cardinals are aiming to finish first in the Division, to easily make it into the playoffs.
The road trip which involves a series against the Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals will have a lot of tests for the Cardinals. The 2011 World Series champions which were struggling last year with 10 games back in the NL Central and 10 and a half in the Wild Card race are looking to surge before the end of the season.
Given the experience of resurgence that the fans witnessed with awe last year, the Cardinals – being six games behind the Reds, there is a much to be seen this year as well.
"I say it's another series, but ... if you're not excited about this whole road trip, let alone tonight and the three games here in Cincinnati, then you probably need to check and see if you have a heartbeat," said Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny.
The challenge is certainly not easy. With the teams like the Reds, Pirates and Nationals – who have been doing remarkably well, the Cardinals will be looking to put tremendous efforts to achieve the desired results.
Mike Matheny is confident about his team and hopes the team will rise up to the expectations. Friday’s series opener against the Reds, it goes without saying, will be exciting for him and the club as a whole.
"This is why you play the game. You play to win," Matheny said. "It's time to grind and figure out a way to do whatever you've got to do each day. We've been pretty consistent, we're not making too much out of one series or anything else, but absolutely, [Friday] is an exciting game."
The Reds, on the other hand, will have the advantage of a supporting crowd. Nonetheless, Cardinals will exert themselves to make their mark in the ongoing road trip. From the Reds to Nationals, competition will indeed be tough for them. However, to retain their title, the Cardinals will be looking to finish their road trip with some impressive performances.
