St. Louis Cardinals looking ahead to challenges – MLB News
The newly hired manager of St. Louis Cardinals Mike Matheny stated on Monday, February 20, that the players realise what they need to do for the success of the organisation.
"These guys realize two things. One is they had a lot to do with the success of this organization. Two, you look around here -- it's a pretty talented group of people. To start discounting what they're going to be able to, I think that's what the chip is
all about."
Contextually asked as to what he thought the club will be able to do in the absence of a slugger like Albert Pujols, Mike Matheny commented that no player is showing any complacence as everyone is working hard.
"I see a lot of chips on shoulders that I didn't think I'd see, and that's a beautiful thing," Matheny said. "I think you can see it in the way they go about their business -- how many guys showed up extra early to be here.”
Also important to mention here is that the current World Series Champions also lost their winning manager in the form of Tony La Russa. He announced his retirement a few days after the club had beaten the Texas Rangers in the best-of-seven World Series.
Spring Training has already seen the committed and highly competitive Redbirds work hard. They are investing both time and energy to satisfactorily prepare themselves for the bigger task ahead, which is to defend the title they won last year.
The Cardinals have a number of reasons to feel confident about themselves. Although departure of Russa and Pujols might have left a vacuum, the club is resilient enough to get on their feet.
In the presence of Chris Carpenter, Skip Schumaker and Yadier Molina, coupled with that of Allen Craig, Shelby Miller and David Freese, the Cardinals have a tremendous amount to count upon. It is, therefore, quite likely that the Cardinals repeat the performance
they exhibited the previous year; routing every rival to win the World Series comfortably just as many observers might not have predicted it.
