St. Louis Cardinals looking to fill second base – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly deliberating over the potential move to fill second base with a number of names popping up as the likely candidates. The 2011 World Series champion, St. Louis Cardinals, was ousted in the National League Championship Series by the San Francisco Giants that went on to clinch the World Series title as well.
For 2012 however, it was Daniel Descalso who held the spot and showed remarkable consistency. Be that as it may, there are still some unanswered questions as to who can eventually occupy that position.
One of the names that came to fore was that of Skip Schumaker. Even though Schumaker has made 382 starts at second base, general manager John Mozeliak has an altogether different view.
"It's just hard to imagine him getting a ton of playing time there with what we know we have and what we know we have coming," Mozeliak said. "It's again a little too early to tell because there's other things that could happen that could change how we view [his role]."
Other name that has neither gone unnoticed nor can be ignored or underestimated at this point is that of Tyler Greene. With Matt Carpenter as another player who has occasionally played at that position, he remains one of the most likely contenders.
Manager Mike Matheny has asked the player to focus on it.
"I told him to make it a focus and go and see what he can do and show up at Spring Training ready to be a ballplayer, ready to play anywhere," Matheny said. "How do I see it [going]? I don't know. We'll just show up at Spring Training and watch him."
The young Carpenter has shown the knack and talent for the position. This season came as a reminder to many that the player has the potential to perform outstandingly well whatever role he is assigned.
But since second base currently remains a concern, the Cardinals’ focus is this spot. In the days to come, especially Spring Training, it will be clear who is going to permanently occupy that position.
