St. Louis Cardinals lose 6-9 against Milwaukee Brewers in opener of ALCS - MLB Playoffs
St. Louis Cardinals’ pitchers received serious punches in the bottom of the fifth and dropped the club into a 6-9 defeat in the first outing of the seven game American League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park in Milwaukee on
Sunday, October 9.
A 5-2 lead gained until the top of the fifth could not be prevented by the Cardinals’ pitching depth. Jaime Garcia, who has made a strong comeback after giving a homer to Ryan Braun in the first inning, made little wobbly pitches in the bottom of the fifth.
Braun made another impact and then Prince Fielder launched a homer to force Garcia to leave the mound.
Garcia gave away six hits, six runs and six earned runs along with three walks in just over four innings. Octavio Dotel could not stop the Brewers’ swinging bat and went for a homer and two runs over his single inning.
Fifth inning took the Brewers from 2-5 to 8-5 and wrote the strong domination of the club over the opposing pitchers. After Lance Lynn tossed a single-hitter sixth inning, the Cardinals were little hopeful of their comeback. They retaliated a little in the
top of the seventh inning and reduced the lead 8-6, but the bottom of the inning sent them back again into a three run deficit.
Kyle McClellan consumed one run on two hits in less than an inning. Marc Rzepczynski closed the seventh with some good pitching and Mitchell Boggs pitched a hitless eighth but it was not enough to take the club back into the game.
Brewers’ Prince Fielder launched a crucial led off homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.
"I don't even know if I heard the ball come off Prince's bat," Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke said. "I knew it was a good swing and came off nice, but when you can't hear the ball, the sound of it, because of all the people yelling."
His hit was followed by the homer of Yuniesky Betancourt.
The series now has turned into a crucial stage for the Cardinals, who will be looking to level it 1-all in Monday night’s competition.
