St. Louis Cardinals lose to New York Mets 2-6 – MLB Recap
The St. Louis Cardinals lost to the New York Mets 2-6 in the third and last game of their three-match regular series encounter on Wednesday, September 5 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Cardinals’ upfront batting line-up did not perform well and suffered a heavy defeat in the end. They scored only two runs and could not show any resistance against the Mets.
Mets on the other hand, played aggressive and maintained their pressure which later in the game proved wonderful as they easily edge past the Cardinals. Mets pitchers remained focused and maintained their valour on the mound.
Especially, starter R.A. Dickey with his knuckleballs kept the Cardinals under pressure and allowed only two runs and eight hits in his 6.2 innings.
He played beautifully and stayed consistent with his 2.64 ERA. He retired five Cardinals’ batters and proved one of the winning factors for the Mets.
"It was a battle for me, I didn't really have a great feel for (the knuckleball) early on. I'm pleased with the results, but obviously I have a little bit of work to do, I hope to win beyond 20. As far as getting to that plateau, it would be really satisfying, I think," Dickey said on his performance.
Later Mets' manager Terry Collins said, "The whole story of what he's had to go through to get where he is today is truly one of the great stories of sports, I'm thrilled. I hope he wins it (the Cy Young). But if he doesn't, he's certainly had a storybook season."
Closer Frank Francisco also showed his class and did not allow any run on his 5.49 ERA. He received one hit and struck-out one batter.
Cardinals’ starter Adam Wainwright however, did not play well and lost the game for his team. He pitched five innings and received five runs with eight hits. He retired five batters but at the same time he received a homer on his 4.04 ERA.
His performance certainly lost the game for the Cardinals as they did not recover from the heavy blows by the Mets’ offence.
