St. Louis Cardinals’ manager Mike Matheny welcomes feedback – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny on Wednesday, October 31, welcomed the feedback pertaining to the team’s overall performance in the 2012 Major League Baseball season. Cardinals made their way into the National League Championship Series, but could not go beyond that after the defeat handed to them by the San Francisco Giants.
"Overall, I agree with the [feedback] that I'm getting, and that's these guys played hard, and they were fun to watch," Matheny said. "They were exciting. And I know that just like the fans are disappointed that [we didn't advance further], we all feel the same way. We were right there. But you put your best foot forward and you see how it all plays out."
Cardinals entered into the season with a massive change that it had undergone as far as the new manager is concerned. Tony La Russa, who was discharging managerial responsibilities for years, had announced his retirement after the win in the World Series last year. It was rookie manager Mike Matheny who had to take the reins.
It was an undeniably arduous challenge. Being in the first year of his professional career as manager, Mike Matheny, nonetheless, lived up to the expectations and instilled a winning spirit in the team, which helped them book a spot in the Wild Card. They then went on to win the National League Division Series.
Considering the challenges that the club faced in the first half of the season, team’s rise after the All-Star Game was for all to witness.
“Being able to take this team and have the success it had, I think, is a great compliment to him and his staff. I especially say that given the turbulent times we went through in May and June,” said general manager John Mozeliak
Although the Cardinals could not continue the march, with their elimination in the National League Championship Series, they – however, did leave enough that will remain a legacy.
For the coming year, it goes without saying, the club will have an altogether different outlook. A combination of young and veteran players will surely set the Cardinals apart from the rivals in the league.
