St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa complements Chris Carpenter after club picks up Game 1 victory
St. Louis Cardinals picked up an all-important win over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, October 19, at the Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The club is now 1 – 0 in the World Series and they can thank Chris Carpenter for providing the important win in Game 1
to put the National League Champions up on the table. Manager Tony La Russa had a lot to say and he wasted no time in complementing Carpenter.
"It was a great performance," manager Tony La Russa said of Carpenter. "They're a great hitting team. If you don't make a lot of pitches, they're going to bang you around. I thought early in the game as close as it was, for both pitchers the balls were very
slick. They were having a little gripping thing but both of them just competed, and they both did a good job. The thing about Carp, he was exactly what we needed."
The Cardinals took the lead with a Lance Berkman’s single to the right, as Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday ran home for two important runs. 2 – 0 up, the Cardinals were in the driving seat as Carpenter handled the ship well. He did however face a possible
loss as the Rangers pulled two runs back with a two-run homer from Mike Napoli. The game could have gone either way if Texas pitcher C. J. Wilson did not falter in the sixth inning to concede another run.
Nevertheless, from six innings of pitching, Carpenter provided his team with a third win in the postseason, under his pitching duties. The player picked up two runs from five hits. Carpenter was assisted by the club’s relievers to take the game home for
the fans as the club is now 1 – 0 in the series.
The Cardinals will trust Carpenter again if the club is unable to end the series in the next three games. The hurler would be expected to return to the mound in Game 5 if the Rangers offer a difficult challenge. The Rangers will be pitching with Colby Lewis
in Game 2 and they will be looking to tie the game 1-1 in the series.
