St. Louis Cardinals’ manager Tony La Russa gets kudos – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ manager Tony La Russa was bestowed with compliments for guiding the team to the winning stand. The Cardinals won the World Series title for the 11th time in their franchise history on Friday as they beat the Texas Rangers
4-3 in the best-of-seven series.
The team did not have a particularly propitious start when the regular season kicked off. The first that the team lost was their ace starting pitcher Adam Wainwright in Spring Training. That was a huge setback for the team.
Injuries kept mounting as it was for a player to come and the other to go type of situation for the team. The situation kept coming the Cardinals way all the while. However, it never deterred them from going ahead as they weathered the storm and prevailed
in the end.
"This team had adversity early, in particular with injuries," DeWitt said. "Holliday was out, he had some crazy injuries. Albert [Pujols] was out for a while. Punto was gone, Schumaker, a lot of players. I know teams have injuries, but we had more than our
share, particularly to key players."
The leadership and guidance of Tony La Russa played the most crucial role in it. From the start when the team suffered a big loss in the face of their starting pitcher, they then went down to over 10 defeats in the regular season. There was no hope that
they would make it to the post-season.
However, Tony La Russa changed the entire spectrum once again, leaving behind any pessimism that could hinder the Cardinals.
"I think Tony's leadership is exactly why we're here, in the sense that he knew the right buttons to push," said general manager John Mozeliak.
From injuries to back-to-back defeats, the Cardinals had a set of problems to overcome. They eventually managed to pull it together when it mattered most. While the players, beyond any shadow of a doubt, had a huge role to play, the team manager, it goes
without saying was the sole motivating factor.
