St. Louis Cardinals’ manager cautions players after Tuesday’s collision incident – MLB News
As the collision between the St. Louis Cardinals' Yadier Molina and Pittsburgh Pirates' Josh Harrison remains a hot debate, the Redbirds' manager on Wednesday, August 29, had words of caution to share.
Matheny’s career was cut short due to all the collisions and the concussions in their aftermath. That is something he does not want to see befalling any of the team’s players; especially the catcher Yadier Molina.
The collision on Tuesday could prove to be disastrous for the player who retains significant importance, remaining one of the most essential parts of the team. As one time catching instructor, he has a lot of things to share with the players.
Cardinals' manager also referred to the San Francisco Giants' manager who remained quite vocal about home-plate collisions.
"As a manager, I'd like to take those [earlier] thoughts and flush them, because I watch our catcher -- and how valuable a piece he is to us -- get trucked like that, and it's hard to watch," Matheny said. "I see why [Giants manager] Bruce Bochy is very outspoken about, 'Let's start making it mandatory to avoid that collision.' The game may go that way, especially with the heightened awareness of concussions and people understanding that it's not just a concussion, it's a brain injury.”
St. Louis Cardinals lost the same game 9-0, a blow that the team might not have been anticipating. That did not stop there and in Wednesday’s game the Redbirds once again lost 5-0, slipping in the three-game series 2-1.
Yadier Molina had to be pulled out of the game due to the neck and back injuries after the collision. The atmosphere on Wednesday remained charged as the both teams came on the field. Nonetheless, the Cardinals were unable to improve their record in the Division, as the Pirates are now one game behind them in the Wild Card race.
What happens in the face of the recent collision incident is something best left to the future. But the teams will definitely not want any repetition given the risks involved in it and the dangers it has for the players on the field.
