St. Louis Cardinals manager proud of his team despite the NLCS setback – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals are formally out of the 2012 Major League Baseball – with the 4-3 defeat in the National League Championship Series by the San Francisco Giants. However, manager Mike Matheny has expressed his confidence in his team, crediting them
with their assiduity and dedication to overcome many obstacles.
The Cardinals were top favourite teams once they edged their way into the National League Division Series after beating the Washington Nationals. The fact that they secured the Wild Card berth with immense hard work was a commentary on their capability and
talent to outrival any team.
Much as their race seemed to be going quite smoothly, the unexpected result in the National League Championship Series, however, was discouraging. Nonetheless, rookie team manager is proud of what his team did throughout the season.
"What I've learned is that we've got a special group of players over on our side, who have overcome a lot of obstacles and who did a lot of things that people didn't think they could do," Matheny said. "There's quite a bit to be excited about if you're a
St. Louis Cardinals fan, and I wanted to make sure these guys don't forget how we got here and the character and the heart that it took to be where we are right now.”
Mike Matheny took the charge of Cardinals at a time when the experienced manager Tony La Russa announced his retirement after the club’s victory in the last year’s World Series championship.
The team initially had a tumultuous start in the season, but as things moved on, they were back. The second half of the season was outstanding, a successful bid to make their way back into the season.
They did it by having their spot booked in the Wild Card, and then the postseason games. But all the efforts seemed to have come to naught at this point time with their ouster from the National League Championship Series.
But even though things were not in the favour of the Cardinals, the team manager thinks there is a lot that the players need to be proud of.
"It wasn't how we scripted it to finish, but it was certainly a great run that these guys need to be very proud of."
With the end of the season, the Cardinals will now be focusing on the next season. Mike Matheny will certainly be looking to affect a visible change in the form of victory for his team in the next year’s World Series.
