St. Louis Cardinals offer Bengie Molina the slot for assistant hitting coach – MLB News
Yadier Molina has had his breakthrough to stardom thanks to the unrivalled skills he has demonstrates both in offence and defence. He can further show off his hitting talents as the St. Louis Cardinals prepare to offer his elder brother Bengie Molina the role of assisting hitting coach.
For the first time in his professional career, Yadier Molina will be playing under the mentorship of his brother, Bengie Molina – if and only the latter accepts the offer. The announcement is expected to be made soon as different news agencies reported on Friday.
It was first the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that broke the news followed by MLB.com confirmation.
With .274 batting average and .307 on-base percentage Bengie, Molina has played with four Major League clubs. That which set him apart was his defensive ability during the career. That experience and talent can now be utilised effectively here.
However, he has never held any professional coaching position. It will be for the first time in his career that he will be having a key role to play after retirement from MLB back in 2010.
The move to offer him the slot came after John Mabry was moved up to replace Mark McGwire – who is now with the Los Angeles Dodgers’.
As to what led to the move, manager Mike Matheny had his views to share.
“I’m just looking for talent,” he said. “I’m looking for the right fit. That has a lot of depth to that definition because there are a lot of different variables. You have a first-year hitting coach for the second-year manager. And [he] just needs to be the right fit. It’s been very encouraging to see the interest level ... in being involved in this organization.”
As the Winter Meetings came to close, surfacing of this news is something important. The Cardinals will have things prepared before the commencement of Spring Training.
This obviously came after an extended search that the Cardinals had after the departure of McGwire and subsequent promotion of Mabry. To be seen now is what the response of Bengie Molina be as Spring Training draws near.
