St. Louis Cardinals option Barret Browning, recall Brandon Dickson – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, August 24, recalled Brandon Dickson, a pitcher that the club hopes will provide strength to the team’s rotation. The decision followed optioning of Barret Browning who was struggling a bit in his last five games.
Having 5.12 ERA in the last five games that he featured in, Browning could not quite maintain his hold, prompting reconsideration by the club. It was here that the Redbirds decided to recall Dickson.
What is pertinent to mention here is the fact that Dickson has had 22 starts for Triple-A Memphis this season, maintaining a 3.55 ERA with 5-11 record. Cardinals’ decision to bring him in was explained by the team manager Mike Matheny who said the team will do what it feels is best.
He also referred to the fact that Browning had a tough stretch.
"It's no secret right now that we don't have room for anything but what we feel is our best," Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny said. "Right now Dickson has been throwing better than anybody in Triple-A, and that would give us a little more depth. It just gives us some more options. We were just at a point with Browning, he was having a tough stretch there of getting guys out."
The stretch, undeniably, is tougher for the 2011 World Series champions. They have had their ups and downs this season, but in the second half of the season, the performance has remained consistent and worthy of commendation.
For Dickson, being called up in this tough stretch is not less exciting as he said, "I was actually kind of looking forward to watching this stretch. It's pretty tough and pretty important, but now it's even more exciting to be a part of it. I wasn't complaining to anybody."
Cardinals are currently playing a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. The series will determine a lot of things for both teams given their tough competition to be at the top of the National League Central.
Although it is the Reds who are occupying the top slot, it is to be seen if they maintain it given the performance of resurgent St. Louis Cardinals.
