St. Louis Cardinals outrival San Francisco Giants with 3-1 win in NLCS Game 3 – NLCS News
Kyle Lohse had another strong start and Matt Carpenter smashed a two-run homer to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 3-1 in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series.
At Busch Stadium, the Cardinals had to bear the early loss of Carlos Beltran with the knee injury that he sustained, prompting them to bring in Matt Carpenter who proved to be an incredibly apt and rewarding replacement.
With the batting blitz, it was an effective reliever in Jason Motte that paved the way for the Cardinals' win. Motte pitched effectively, to get the first two-inning save of the career.
Going against the Giants’ ace Matt Cain, Matt Carpenter smashed two-run homer in the second inning to make it 2-1 for the Cardinals just when Pablo Sandoval had scored a run in the third inning.
With the 2-1 lead in their favour, the Cardinals relied on Kyle Lohse to do the needed. Lohse had five walks, allowed a run, but tried to keep the batters at bay as the lead kept intact until he was replaced by Trevor Rosenthal.
Edward Mujica came to pitch in the sixth, surrendered two hits and was replaced by Mitchell Boggs who struck-out Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt. As the lead stood 2-1, a run-scoring single by Shane Robinson put the Cardinals in effective charge of the game with 3-1 lead.
The game was interrupted for just over three hours due to rain as Cain completed his 6.2 innings followed by Javier Lopez.
Once the game restarted after the delay, Jason Motte was brought in the eighth inning at a time when the bullpen seemed heavily burdened. Motte pitched his career’s best innings to pave the way of success for the Cardinals, out-manoeuvring the Giants' batters.
Jason Motte who already had 42 saves in 2012 proved his efficacy and pitched a scoreless ninth to have another save for the Cardinals, winning Game 3 of the NLCS 3-1 to take the lead in best-of-seven games 2-1.
Game 4 will be played on Thursday at Busch Stadium with Adam Wainwright on the mound as the Cardinals' starter.
