St. Louis Cardinals overwhelm the Chicago Cubs with 5-1 victory – MLB Update
The St. Louis Cardinals staged a comeback on Saturday, April 14, to beat the Chicago Cubs 5-1 in a game where Lance Lynn made most of the opportunity to start, the pitcher allowed only a run in his 5.1-inning spell.
This was the fourth victory for the St. Louis Cardinals in last six games that they played. However, Saturday’s victory was important in that it came a day after the Cubs beat the Cardinals 9-5, dealing a severe blow to the expectations of the World Series Champions to stay atop.
While fully commanding the game, Lance Lynn also had the backup of the offence which did wonderfully well offensively. Yadier Molina had two hits and as many RBIs to take up the lead for the Cardinals.
However, Lance Lynn remained the focus of the attention for understandable reasons. Cardinals failed in the last game largely to their defence, but here was the starter who was too tough a challenge for the Cubs to withstand.
Lynn came in the team when Chris Carpenter had irritation in his throwing arm, being unable to pitch. Lynn proved to be a good substitute.
The starter struck a humble note, as well as his avowal to stay effective. "I'm just going to try and do what I'm capable of and not try to do too much," he said. "Just make pitches and try not to give up runs."
The St. Louis Cardinals team manager was satisfied with Lynn’s performance in Saturday’s game. "I thought he was very good. He's just got good movement on his fastball," Matheny said. "Obviously, he's got some velocity on it. We all have high expectations."
The Cardinals scored their first four runs in the fourth inning when Yadier Molina, David Descalso, and Taylor Greene scored. It was Chris Volstad, who after pitching three strong innings, could not maintain the performance and gave up the runs.
Lynn gave up a run in the fifth when Starlin Castro singled to centre. Jason Motte then pitched a scoreless inning to put an end to the game with 5-1 victory over the Cubs.
