St. Louis Cardinals possibly without Albert Pujols as John Mozeliak feels team still has positives
The St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak stated on Wednesday, November 2 that World Series Champions have the resilience meet head on any challenge that comes their way. He was of the view that in the event of any player’s departure, there is
a core of players that can sustain the team.
He was apparently referring to Albert Pujols who is a free agent now. The resourceful slugger had an inarguably strong role in bringing the Cardinals the glory they had in 2011. Albert Pujols, considered an icon of the Cardinals, is among the greatest player
of this era.
"Clearly, we still think we have a lot of core players, elite-type players, who are part of this organization," Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak said during the World Series.
He stated that even if the team was ‘Albert-less’, he believed there were still a lot of positives coming for the Cardinals.
A look at the Cardinals list of players proves his argument absolutely right. Starting from David Freese, who got the Most Valued Player’s award in the World Series and National League Championship Series, is one of the long list of players that strengthens
the team.
From Jaime Garcia to Lance Lynn, from Jon Jay to Allen Craig and from Jason Motte to David Freese, there is enough pool of talent in the Cardinals to utilise at any point in time. Prior to announcing his retirement, this was what Tony La Russa had also expressed.
"I feel great about what's here for 2012," he said. "The job, everybody knows it's a great place to manage, and the team is very solid. So, I feel really good about leaving and them looking forward to another chance to win next year with whoever manages."
Among other players that the Cardinals boast are Lance Berkman and Matt Holliday. Berkman, had a .301 average this year with 31 homers to his credit while Matt Holliday battled injuries that constantly perturbed the player.
Despite all that, it is Albert Pujols who remains a constant source of inspiration for the Redbirds and a regular contributor whom the team will wish to retain.
