St. Louis Cardinals renew offer to Albert Pujols – MLB News
With the Miami Marlins working hard to acquire Albert Pujols, the St. Louis Cardinals stated on Tuesday, December 6, they are doing their bit to re-sign the free-agent and All-Star slugger who has remained a virtually permanent fixture of the Cardinals.
While refusing to give any detail as to what the Cardinals have planned, John Mozeliak while speaking to press on Tuesday stated that the club has now tendered a new contract offer to Albert Pujols.
What is important is the fact that it was in the last winter when the Cardinals had made an offer to Pujols, which was said to be $195 million for a period of 9 years, which seemed a wonderful deal. But Pujols did not seem to have found it an exciting offer.
If there was any cloud of confusion or uncertainty, it still stays there up until the Marlins or the Cardinals succeed in swaying Pujols’ decision with a big deal offer. Mozeliak, however, did say that the deal was going to come quickly, declining to comment
if it was his team which would eventually get it.
"I suspect [resolution] is going to come quickly," Mozeliak said. "But we'll see. I can't say that with any confidence. That would have to come from that camp, their camp."
After the Marlins made a reportedly $200 million offer, the earnestness shown by the Cardinals becomes understandable.
"We've definitely put all of our eggs into this basket as far as trying to address it," Mozeliak said. "So for the resources upstairs here [in the team's suite], meaning all the people working, it would be helpful to start looking at other options if necessary."
What it makes clear is the fact that the Cardinals did not want to let it go without putting up a fight. That a team like the Cardinals, which is the World Series Champion this year, does not want to let go of their slugger proves the player is virtually
the backbone of the team.
What the offers simultaneously made by the Cardinals and Marlins does is something that will become clear by the end of this week.
