St. Louis Cardinals rout Houston Astros 6-1 – MLB Recap
St. Louis Cardinals defeated Houston Astros 6-1 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Monday, September 24 at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
“I don't think anybody would look past us losing our starting shortstop, an All-Star, leadoff hitter for most of the season, and think that was not going to be impactful on our club, Pete was given the opportunity and he just jumped on it. That's how most careers are started," manager Mike Matheny said about his team’s tremendous performance.
Matheny added, "He was in hot water the first two, guys all over the bases, but he worked his way through it and got better as he went, It's just impressive when he gets his fastball going."
Catcher Yadier Molina played well and proved his game on his three at-bats. He scored one run and smashed two hits along with an RBI. He stood tall against the Astros' pitchers and remained calm on the plate with a slugging percentage of .510.
Third baseman Matt Carpenter added one run for the Cardinals as he also smashed two hits on his .482 slugging percentage.
Second baseman Daniel Descalso batted four times and scored one run and two hits along with an important RBI on his persistent .322 slugging percentage. His performance was exceptional as he provided early focus to the Cardinals’ upfront batting line-up.
Shortstop Pete Kozma scored two runs and smashed two hits along with two RBIs. His contribution was huge in the Cardinals win as he also remained consistent with his slugging percentage at .596.
Along with batters, the Cardinals' pitchers also did well and earned a great victory for their team.
