St. Louis Cardinals’ shortstop Rafael Furcal goes onto disabled list – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ shortstop Rafael Furcal has been placed on disabled list due to a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.
With this serious injury, his chances to make a potential comeback into the season is very hard while some inside experts have already started speculating in the media that Furcal will not be part of the Cardinals’ line-up for rest of the season.
Cardinals believe that their All-Star defender, who will not be part of their pursuit of their post season qualification, is a bad sign for the team.
St. Louis' team management on the other hand, still has not decided whether their player will need potential surgery or will require a complete rehab process.
If the Cardinals do go for a potential rehab, they must understand that their player will be out for six to eight months which means that this season and next Spring Training is questionable for Furcal.
“He's been a great addition to this team and we hate to see that happen to him, But we've had many of those (injuries) happen throughout the season. It's just an opportunity for someone else to step up, not just at shortstop, but to pick up the slack with the energy that he brings every day," manager Mike Matheny said.
On the other hand, Furcal’s injury has provoked the management to promote infielder Pete Kozma from Class AAA Memphis and now he will be the part of the batting line-up for the remainder of the season. At the moment, the Cardinals are looking forward to get the second Wild Card berth which is certainly a crucial moment for them.
“If at some point we could help ourselves by going outside, we'd explore it, Defensively, he's always been solid, The question's been, how much could he hit?” said general manager John Mozeliak.
"Pete is going to get an opportunity tonight and we'll take it from there," Later manager Matheny said.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are also quite sure that their replacement for Furcal is a good player and in the coming days, he will benefit them with huge success.
