St. Louis Cardinals sign a contract with Skip Schumaker – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals moved on Monday night, December 12, to sign a contract with the infielder and outfielder Skip Schumaker. The move came in the wake of the news reports that the player might face arbitration if the contract was not extended to the
infielder.
All the same, only recently did the most prominent slugger of the team, and one of the best in contemporary times, Albert Pujols moved to the Los Angeles Angels that has created a gap in the roster which will not be covered pretty easily.
By avoiding this arbitration, the St. Louis Cardinals have enabled themselves to keep the roster charged and active come the next season. The current World Series Champions did not move to tender a contract to infielder Ryan Theriot, which will end up making
him a free-agent.
However, important as the move is without any shadow of doubt, Schumaker was instrumental in lending victories to the St. Louis Cardinals this year. If nothing else, only in the playoffs and the World Series’ last two games was his performance exciting.
A look at his stats this year substantiates that fact. In the 117 games that the infielder made his appearance, he had .283 average with no less than .381 average in the playoffs, somewhere he remained up and higher than any player around.
His most amazing performance, one that will constitute a powerful memory was his game-winning RBI against the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth game of the National League Division Series, just when the latter had become almost a victory.
It is also worthwhile to recall that he has been the regular fixture of the St. Louis Cardinals since 2001. This one decade of association with the team makes him a natural choice for the St. Louis Cardinals.
All the same, it was Albert Pujols who also had the association spanning over a decade. But it could not continue any longer when the player signed a ten-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels, a deal which is said to be over $250 million, something that
the Cardinals were not able to offer.
