St. Louis Cardinals sign left-hand relief pitcher J.C. Romero – MLB News
As Albert Pujols has gone to Los Angeles Angels, the St. Louis Cardinals are not sitting behind to upgrade their roster for repeating a world class display of extraordinary performance that sealed their 2011 World Series brilliant victory
against the Texas Rangers.
Now the Cardinals have signed free agent left-handed reliever J.C. Romero for one year, who last played for the Colorado Rockies in 2011 Major League. With Romero’s arrival, the Cardinals are on right path to rebuild their roster for next season after some
of their top players signed with some other teams in the league.
Romero will be replacing their left-handed specialist reliever Arthur Rhodes who performed tremendously with the World Series winning team but could not gain the confidence of his franchise, which two weeks ago traded him to cut some salary costs.
Some reporters earlier have also speculated in the media that the Cardinals were already in pursuit of Romero last season but late in 2010, he joined hands with Colorado Rockies and played an entire career with them.
After signing Romero, the Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak said in a press release on Friday stating how important and significance his game will be going to prove for us in the near future. He also praised Romero’s talent and acknowledged how productive
he had been for several MLB teams including the Minnesota Twins along with Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals.
Mozeliak added, “Romero is a proven lefty specialist, who has been a valuable bullpen piece for winning teams throughout his career, we felt that it was important to maintain versatility and depth within our bullpen and we feel that J.C. will be a solid
addition.”
Romero’s stats are also very good as he will certainly prove an ace for the Cardinals next season. Seeing his last year’s performance with the Rockies, he pitched with an average of 4.07 ERA, along with 19 strike-outs and 1.74 WHIP while his career ERA of
4.01, along with seven saves, 520 strike-outs and 1.50 WHIP also makes him a good reliever and especially a right choice whom the Cardinals have chosen for their own good.
