St. Louis Cardinals sweep series against Chicago Cubs with 7-0 win – MLB News
Lance Lynn on Sunday, July 22, pitched six strong innings to help the St. Louis Cardinals sweep the series against the Chicago Cubs with 7-0 win at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals remained as solid and effective as they were in the previous two games to outshine the Cubs.
The offence remained equally ferocious, coming down hard on the Cubs' pitchers as Matt Holliday and Carlos Beltran homered on consecutive pitches to outmanoeuvre the Cubs' defence.
This obviously brought about enormous excitement in the camp and among the happiest was Mike Matheny – the team manager. What goes to the advantage of the Cardinals is the strong pitching.
"You see guys having big numbers and our record really wasn't indicative of that," Matheny said. "It's just a matter of kind of putting it together and those hits falling in timely spots."
Faced by the rival Travis Wood on the mound, Lance Lynn went for scoreless six innings, having five strike-outs to his credit. Travis Wood – on the other hand, gave up no less than seven runs in his six-inning spell, allowing nine hits.
Lynn was happy with his good pitching display.
"It was one of those days that command-wise I wasn't where I needed to be early in the count," Lynn said. "But I was able to make pitches to get out of situations. You've got to do that sometimes."
Jon Jay made a good start for the Cardinals in the very first inning against Travis Wood, doubling to shallow left to give 2-0 lead to the Redbirds. Tony Cruz followed with a double to right to make it 4-0 for the Cardinals as the first inning came to an end.
While Lynn was overpowering the Cubs' hitters, Tyler Greene hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-0 for the Cardinals.
Matt Holliday and Carlos Beltran went for solo homers simultaneously to make it an unsurpassable 7-0 as Travis Wood failed miserably to contain the Cardinals' hitters.
Marc Rzepczynski pitched a scoreless and hitless ninth to end the game with 7-0 victory for the Cardinals, helping them better their record in the National League Central.
