St. Louis Cardinals thrash Washington Nationals 8-0 in Game 3 of NLDS – MLB Recap
St. Louis Cardinals thrashed the Washington Nationals 8-0 in the third game of their five-match National League Division Series on Wednesday, October 10 at Nationals Park in Washington.
"We're not out of this, by a long shot, Shoot, I've had my back to worse walls than this," Nationals' manager Davey Johnson said.
Chris Carpenter played wonderfully for the Cardinals and earned a great victory for his team. He pitched 5.2 innings and received seven hits. He struck-out two while he remained confident on the plate during his spell.
"To go from not being able to compete, and not only compete but help your team, to be able to be in this situation, it's pretty cool," Carpenter said.
"Carp's been a dominant pitcher his whole career. Big-game pitcher, He showed up, He pitched well today. We had him in some spots. We had him on the ropes a couple of times. We were just one bloop away from a totally different ballgame," Washington's Jayson Werth said of Carpenter’s brilliant performance.
He kept the Nationals’ batters under pressure and showed great temperament on the plate. He did not give any loop-holes in his pitching and stood tall against the Nationals’ upfront batting line-up.
Not only Carpenter, but the Cardinals’ relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal also played well and showed his brilliance.
He pitched 1.1 innings and struck-out one on his short spells. Rosenthal supported his starter well and proved too good for the Nationals.
On the other hand, the Nationals’ entire roster did not play well and lost in the end with bitter humiliation.
Their pitchers and batters could not save the game against the Cardinals’ top offence.
Starter Edwin Jackson pitched five innings and received four runs and eight hits. He received one homer while his ERA rose to 7.20 which eventually proved disastrous for the Nationals. "I didn't feel like I was out of rhythm,” Jackson said.
Relief pitcher Craig Stammen also played poorly as he pitched only one inning and received one run and one hit. He struck-out two while his ERA rose to 11.57.
