St. Louis Cardinals thrash the Cincinnati Reds with 7-1 win —MLB Update
The St. Louis Cardinals’offence shone once again on Monday, April 09, to beat the Cincinnati Reds by 7-1. In a game that started with three homers in the very first inning, the Cardinals also had Jake Westbrook at their disposal who virtually dismantled
the Reds.
While David Freese, Yadier Molina and Matt Holliday went for a homer each in the very first inning against Homer Bailey – the Cincinnati Reds’ starter, Westbrook proved to be an embodiment of strong defence to keep the Cardinals’ lead intact with effective
pitching.
The Cardinals’ extraordinary show of offence in last few games goes on to testify that they have gone past the time when Albert Pujols played an ultimately decisive role in endowing victory on the Cardinals.
Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina hit a one-run homer, while David Freese went for a two-run homer to give the lead to the Cardinals in the very first inning as Homer Bailey struggled to maintain his grip on the game.
"I just got a little passive," Bailey said. "I got the two quick outs and I didn't say aggressive. Once you open that can of worms, it's kind of hard to shut it. Plus the wind was blowing out. After that, I just wanted to go deep into the game. A couple
of the balls they hit out were hit really solid."
Westbrook only allowed a run in the bottom of the 5th inning when Zack Cozart scored. Yadier Molina then hit a double to deep left centre in the top of the 8th inning while M. Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly against Jose Arredondo bringing
the lead to 7-1.
Fernando Salas then threw a scoreless 9th inning to seal the 7-1 victory for the Cardinals, leaving the Reds in disarray. Of the 5 games they have played so far, the Cardinals remain the dominant ones with 4-1 record as they prepare to defend
their title.
The win has also provided the Cardinals 1-0 lead in the three-game series. When the two teams meet on Tuesday, it will be interesting to see if the Reds somehow make their way back with a victory.
