St. Louis Cardinals to fill the middle infield – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak said on Thursday, December 1, that the club was looking at the names of different prospects to cover the middle infield. Considering the fact that there is no big list of available free-agents in the
infielder, the club has to intensify the search.
Whatever line of thought has to be followed, ultimately the prime focus of the Cardinals at least for now, is Albert Pujols. The 2011 World Series Champion, the Cardinals, has an effective strategy to fill the gaps, nonetheless the infield will represent
a challenge to them.
If the Cardinals decide to invest the money on Albert Pujols, a free-agent currently, they will have fewer options to find an effectively strong player from the market due to penury constraints. Although inconsistency had plagued Tyler Greene’s performance
this year, his name has popped up to fill that gap in the infield.
But the clarity could only be gained once the talks on Albert Pujols produce some result. Provided Albert Pujols comes, Greene may go at short, providing a supposedly strong defence for the St. Louis Cardinals at this juncture.
"There is some school of thought to try to give Tyler Greene that opportunity," general manager John Mozeliak said. "So I think we've had some meetings, and we're going to continue to assess over the next couple weeks, but we're not closing any doors either
on the free-agent market."
As for second base, the club has less to worry it seems. The names like Ryan Theriot, Skip Schumaker and Daniel Descalso. Also, when Nick Punto returns, indeed bode well for the St. Louis Cardinals.
With such a big list of choices at second base, the Cardinals will have to worry about nothing apart from the middle infield which they will like to fill. For that to happen, the Winter Meetings hold key.
The victory that the St. Louis Cardinals achieved in the 2011 World Series, in effect, owed to the rare combination of offence and defence. To repeat the same performance, the Cardinals do indeed need to fill the gaps prior to the start of next season.
