St. Louis Cardinals to focus on roster – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals are not focusing their attention exclusively to hiring Albert Pujols. It is, rather, moving beyond this transaction and looking to other possibilities. The 2011 World Series Champions have a lot of gaps to fill when it comes to their
rotation.
Among other things, importantly, it is second base and shortstop that remain permanent questions to talk about. As for the left side of the bullpen, there indeed is a need for some attention to that as well.
Mike Matheny, who recently assumed charge after Tony La Russa announced his retirement soon after winning the World Series, will have his first test as the new manager. So far, he has maintained a low profile.
Middle infield is one of the aspects of the game that the Cardinals will be looking at. Provided Pujols does not stay and leaves, he will likely be replaced by Lance Berkman. Allen Craig is to go in the right field, a position he may guard better than many.
Adron Chambers will probably go for backup centre fielder while left-handed relief is to be delegated to Marc Rzepczynski who is facing the trade deadline. In the case of Marc Rzepczynski’s departure, the most distinctly possible replacement is in Arthur
Rhodes.
Carlos Martinez and Zack Cox, among many others, are the likely prospects for the St. Louis Cardinals for the next season. Not to forget Matt Adams and Kolten Wong. But as the reports suggest, the Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak has shown some kind
of reluctance when it comes to taking players from the farm system.
So there is a predominant likelihood of seeing a lot activity when it comes to seeing the roster move up. With a lot of names in the list, the reality remains it is the name of Albert Pujols that is on the top at the moment.
Whatever happens to this free-agent, it will mark a huge change in the outlook of the St. Louis Cardinals. It is one of the reasons why the Cardinals, while arguing otherwise, think seriously about Pujols as to what happens to his free agency.
