St. Louis Cardinals to look into options for second base – MLB News
Problem pretty much exists, but its resolution is neither implausible nor unachievable.
The St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has sought to dismiss the perception regarding the lack of choices to fill the second base. After trading Skip Schumaker, questions have started arising over the Cardinals’ ability to fill it with an equally effective
second baseman.
However, much as the problem seems to be a bigger one, Matheny on Wednesday – December 19, made it clear that there are viable candidates to be positioned there. That essentially means that even the departure of Tyler Greene – after he was dealt, the Cardinals
have their plans clear.
"As far as second base goes, we have some very viable candidates, and we just go give these guys opportunities without drawing up conclusions at the beginning," Matheny said. "There are opportunities. We're going to give opportunities to all the players
and just see how the pieces come together."
One of the names that has popped up to get the second base is that of Daniel Descalso. With experience and exposure, and being there when the Cardinals won the World Series, he seems the right choice.
Be that as it may, there is no final word on this move. Both the general manager – Mike Mozeliak, and manager Mike Matheny avoided promising the job to the player. That is largely because they want to see how things go in the Spring Training.
Also, importantly, the Cards have not stopped looking for other options in the market. With the onset of offseason, despite no major transactions, the Cardinals got the pieces they needed for 2013.
However, there is less likelihood of the Cardinals’ finding the right candidate in the market given the fact that it has so far remained underwhelming in their eyes.
There were previously some suggestions that the club might be looking for a shortstop too given the persisting injury of Rafael Furcal. All said, although there are some needs at the moment, Cards have ruled out going for any big move.
In days ahead, the inevitable clouds of uncertainty that have been hanging for a while might start dispersing with the Cardinals some moves to get the right player for the spot.
