St. Louis Cardinals to play three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds – MLB News
As the rush to outrival the opponents in the National League Central intensifies, the St. Louis Cardinals will take on the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, August 24. The Reds that sit atop the NL Central ranking have a strong rival in the Cardinals, bracing themselves to keep their lead intact.
Much as the Reds are preparing themselves to play the three-game series against the Cardinals, the Redbirds team manager appears to be impatiently waiting for the encounter. It is pertinent to remember that the two teams have six more games to play in the season.
Three of those six games shall be played here as the Cardinals visit the Reds. Cardinals' team manager referred to the previous close competition, keeping every player and the fan on edge.
"I can't wait to play them," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "That's so contradictory to everything I've said ... but you look at this trip coming up and how that series went [immediately after the All-Star break] and how close that series was, it certainly could have gone three games the other [way] for us.”
The Reds currently have a seven game lead. That lead is to be reduced to the minimum level by the Cardinals, something that is more of an uphill task that the Redbirds realise very well.
Cardinals will then play the Pittsburgh Pirates in the three-game series followed by one wherein they will compete against the Washington Nationals in four-game series. With challenges increasing, the Cardinals are bracing, if not fully ready, to turn the tide.
Matheny, the team manager, on the other hand, sees the series against the Reds both as fun and exciting.
He said, "We haven't had a lot of conversations about it, because we're all about staying in the here and now, but that's going to be a fun series."
The last time the two teams met, it was the Reds that easily swept the series, leaving the Cardinals off guard. Friday’s opener will be a highlight of what is coming ahead as the rivals tussle for first position in the ranking.
