St. Louis Cardinals to rely on offence against Philadelphia Phillies – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals have decided to focus their attention and revive the offence in the remaining three games of the National League Division Series. On Sunday, October 1 the Cardinals staged a comeback in the five-game Series, beating the Philadelphia
Phillies 5-4.
Interestingly, that which did not go unnoticed even by the otherwise unbeatable Philadelphia Phillies, it was the unusually good performance of the Cardinals’ offence that obliterated any hope of the Phillies to get a smooth ride in the series.
Phillies stormed the Cardinals and then rammed into their offence to leave them off-guard, beating the team by 11-6. Nonetheless, the Cardinals fought back in the second game to reverse the lead the Phillies had secured.
It was only possible through a charged offence that the Cardinals put into effect. The team had 13 hits in the game, including that of sixth with runners in scoring position. From Albert Pujols to Allen Craig and Jon Jay, every hitter had a contribution.
Thus, in all likelihood, the Cardinals can credibly rely on their offence. If the same spirit remains and accompanies the team, the Phillies will be looking to put an extra effort to deal with it.
"The one thing you can say about our offense it that it's been consistent with power and production," Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak said Monday. "Our guys put the ball in play."
When the team manager La Russa was asked what gave the team zeal to put up such a fight, he referred to the characteristic aggression of the offence.
La Russa said, “We try to be aggressive with real good plate discipline. If you do both those things, the pitcher gets to be a little bit more concerned about throwing the ball down the middle.”
With the five-game Series standing tied 1-all, it will be interesting to observe how the Cardinals make use of the offence against the excellent pitchers of the Philadelphia Phillies. St. Louis will be looking to put in a tremendous offensive effort against
the powerful pitching of the Phillies.
