St. Louis Cardinals to retain Yadier Molina – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak has stated that Yadier Molina is a player that the team will like to have for the long term. His comment came after he discussing the team’s strategy for the next season as Yadier Molina will become
a free-agency by then.
While the team’s general manager spoke of retaining the player, he opted for being unforthcoming about the possible contract deal with the catcher and hitter.
"He is certainly someone we would like to keep here long term," general manager John Mozeliak said recently. "As far as timing, we'll keep that between the club and player."
A catcher per-excellence, he is perpetually counted upon by the St. Louis Cardinals. Especially from the pitchers of the Cardinals that hold high opinion for his creativity behind the plate. Yadier remains one of the three catchers of the Cardinals in recent
years with multiple Gold Glove Awards to his credit. Two other catchers with such distinction are Mike Matheny and Tom Pagnozzi.
With his distinguished quality to be a dreaded figure when it comes to thwarting bases-stealing, Molina is regarded as a potent force, providing huge support to the club whenever needed. Small wonder then that most of the players hold admiration for the
player.
"That's my boy," said Cardinals’ reliever J.C. Romero. "I knew Yadi before all you guys knew him. He's an outstanding defensive catcher. He's become a good hitter as well. It's going to be fun. ... I'm looking forward to that."
What is not very clear now is the future of the deal with the player. The team, while having known the services the player has rendered in defence, now looks to him in doing marvels in the offence as well. The question then remains as to whether he will
be serving in either the defence or offence.
He maintained an impressive average of .305 the past season in 139 games that he played, having 14 home-runs with 65 RBIs to his credit, scoring a total of 55 runs with .465 SLG and .814 OPS throughout the season.
