Question:

St. Louis Cardinals trades and standings?

I'm a Cardinals fan and whenever I watch Sportscentre or ESPN News I never see anything to do with the Cardinals besides whether they win or lose. You always hear about the major four teams like Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs and Dodgers but rarely the Cardinals.

How come the Cardinals never get big star players like Ramirez or any trades for that matter? Does anyone else feel like I do about their team or the Cards?

  1. I'm with you. The most celebrated NL World Series winner never gets much attention, even with the best hitter in the game playing first base for them. They were written off this season and look where they are.

As to the players, I have to disagree a little. Why, just this last post-season they unloaded Scott Rolen and picked up Troy Glaus, who has been a big help. No, maybe they don't get the Griffeys and the Ramirezes, but you have to take into account that both of those guys are up there in years. C.C. Sabathia, another story.

  2. ESPN has nothing to do with the Cardinals making trades

  3. The Cardinals have made major mid-season trades in the past, like the acquisitions of Larry Walker and Scott Rolen. The reason that you didn't hear about the Cardinals making trades this year is because they didn't make any. So, there was nothing for ESPN to report. Trades like that are less likely to happen now. The Cardinals are somewhat cheap, and they also want to be extremely conservative about trading away top prospects. That is one of the reasons why Walt Jockety left the organization; he didn't share the philosophy. Also, I believe that DeWitt is more concerned with keeping the Cardinals competitive than he is with winning another World Series. The Cardinals, for better or worse, simply don't feel as compelled as other teams to trade away young players or take gambles, particularly after winning the Series in 2006.
