St. Louis County prosecutors file felony charges against ex-NBA player Darius Miles: NBA Update
The former National Basketball Association player Darius Miles made the headlines in the sporting world once again on Wednesday, when it was learnt that prosecutors have filed criminal charges against him for illicitly carrying
a loaded weapon in his baggage on August 3, 2011 at the St. Louis airport.
The charges were filed on Friday by the St. Louis County prosecutors and if found guilty in this case, Miles could receive a maximum sentence of four-year prison.
Miles was caught when his baggage went through the X-ray screening at Lambert Airport security. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) had contacted the local police at once, which subsequently arrested Miles from the
spot. The officials of the TSA at that time didn’t disclose the type of weapon, which Miles tried to carry through the security.
The 3rd overall pick from the 2000 NBA Draft, deposited 10 percent of his $15,000 bond on Monday, after he arrived at the St. Louis County jail on October 3, 2011, as told by the jail authorities.
Both Miles and his attorney, Scott Rosenblum were not available to comment on the situation. Since, no phone number of Darius’ residence in the St. Louis suburb of Swansea, Ill., was found. While, Scott didn’t respond to the messages
sent to him in quest of comments on Wednesday.
This wasn’t the first time that Miles was found breaching the law, as back in May 2009, he was arrested by the police, when they stopped him for violating a traffic signal and during the search of his car they found a plastic bag
of marijuana in the passenger compartment. However, fortunately for Darius, those charges were dropped few months back this year, after he successfully finished the course on drug education.
In December 2010, Miles received a ticket when he was found driving on a suspended driver’s-licence. After which Miles was put under court’s custody for a year and he also had to post $1000 in terms of court fees and fines.
The 6 foot 9 small forward didn’t only violate the laws on the streets, he was also barred from the game of basketball by the NBA, when he used a banned substance in his lone season with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008-09. As a result
of that Miles had to sat out of the court for 10 games.
The TSA had made their rules pretty clear for guidance of the passengers that they can carry weapons or their parts and ammos on airplanes, only in verified baggage. Moreover, the weapon or gun should not be loaded and it should
be crammed in a hard-sided box. The TSA also advises passengers to contact their respective airlines for further clarifications on their rules regarding weapons and ammo.
However, as far as 29 years old, Miles is concerned, who had played with four NBA teams in his pro career and scored with an average of 10.1 points and clutched 4.9 boards per game, it remains to be seen how he will defend himself
in front of the judge and jury when the case progresses further.
