St. Louis Rams’ Bryan Mattison trying to learn offence – NFL News
Bryan Mattison has not yet received the lucky break that could determine the course of his future in the National Football League (NFL), but the player is hopeful of utilising the opportunity in hand to its best so as to yield maximum gains.
After playing at defensive positions first for Baltimore Ravens then St. Louis Rams, Mattison has been shifted to the offensive line in which he will provide his services at the position of guard.
It is still not clear if he is going to be the starter in the 2012 season, but if he impresses the coaching staff, particularly head coach, Jeff Fisher, during the organised team activities (OTAs) and training camp before the preseason games, he could get
the opportunity to become the starter.
At the moment, his main focus is to learn the offence and get ready to play at guard.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, he said of playing at the new position:
“I think every day no matter where you’re at is an opportunity to prove yourself. All you can ask for is an opportunity and right now the main focus is learn the offence, get the offence right and master it and just competes. Everything else will work itself
out down the road.”
Mattison should try to learn the offence as soon as possible because he is not the only one who could get the starting role in the next season.
In fact, Rams’ fifth-round pick in the 2012 draft, Rokevious Watkins, is also a contender of the starting role.
Fisher has been monitoring the performance of Mattison and Watkins and while the head coach thinks that the former is capable of playing at guard, he also did not rule out the possibility of starting with Watkins.
Fisher said:
“Yeah, there’s ability there. We’ve got flexibility. I wouldn’t rule out Rok there, either. Rok has showed in just a couple of days that he’s heavy handed, he’s smart and he can move people. That’s what we are looking for.”
Meanwhile, the rookie has said that he is working as hard as possible to learn the offence and that it will be up to the coaches to decide if he should get the starting role.
