St. Louis Rams’ GM Les Snead shares his thoughts about rebuilding team – NFL News
When Les Snead took charge of responsibilities as St. Louis Rams’ general manager, he had a lot to look for.
He had joined a team that was one of the sorry tales of the last National Football League (NFL) season. The team had a new head coach, some new coaching staff members and a second overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft to deal with.
Rams could only win two games last season and after 14 defeats they ended the season at the bottom of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division. They could not qualify for the playoffs, and the team earned a second overall pick in the draft for
the pathetic performance.
Not only that, the ownership fired the then head coach and general manager and brought new faces in the house.
When Snead joined the team, Jeff Fisher had already taken charge of responsibilities as Rams’ head coach.
He joined Fisher and other scouts and conducted extensive meetings to get to know the exact nature of the franchise. After evaluating the strength and weaknesses, he had to deal with the draft pick.
After careful consideration, Rams decided to stick with their quarterback, Sam Bradford, and hence the second pick was of no use to him. They traded down the pick with Washington Redskins to gain more picks. Just before the draft, they traded their pick
down further with the Dallas Cowboys.
Before the draft, Rams hired a few players from the free agency and attempted to fill the rest of the holes through the draft hiring.
Snead had spent 13 years with Atlanta Falcons before joining the Rams. He had also served Jacksonville Jaguars.
While giving an interview to NFL.com’s Albert Breer, Snead said that experience is the key factor that enables anyone to make important decision. He also said that his experience helped him a lot in dealing with the issues his new club was facing.
Snead said:
"I would hate to get in this chair or this job too early and not have the experience. You realize the computer's not your brain. You realise it's your brain and the experience and the knowledge and all those things combined over the years, but really it's
the experience. The experience gives you a foundation where you're confident to make decisions. And it gives, let's call it 'a young 41-year-old,' the wisdom to make decisions."
The GM has done his job and now it is up to Fisher to train the players and revamp the franchise’s tarnished image by performing well on the field.
