St. Louis Rams’ head coach, Jeff Fisher, interested in re-hiring Gregg Williams – NFL News
St. Louis Rams’ head coach, Jeff Fisher, has said that the Rams might be interested in re-hiring defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, who has been suspended indefinitely by the National Football League (NFL) after he was found guilty of running an illegal
bounty programme during his association with the New Orleans Saints.
Fisher, who has joined the Rams recently, convinced Williams to desert Saints and join Rams. Both are very good friends and Williams did not deny Fisher’s request.
It was seemingly a good acquisition for the Rams, who had a humiliating last season, and were in their revamping stage after introducing new personnel in the front office.
However, things went the other way round when an NFL investigation revealed that Williams was running an illegal bounty programme and he used to offer monetary rewards to Saints’ players if they knocked their opponents out.
As a result, the league took a stern action and penalised Saints’ general manager and head coach. However, Williams, who was actually the mastermind behind that programme, was banned for indefinite period and hence his association with Rams could not extend.
Now, Fisher thinks that if somehow Williams is reinstated by the league, the Rams might consider re-hiring him.
He said:
"You know we have to consider that. I think there will be a lot of conversations at the league-office level. Gregg is very, very remorseful at this point. He regrets everything that took place. He came out in his statement and said that. And I think Gregg,
at the end of the day, is going to do some great things for this league off the field before he comes back."
Following the league’s announcement of placing the ban on Williams, Rams said that they would respect the decision and were ready to move on.
Recently, Fisher also announced his coaching staff in which the Rams did not bring Williams’ replacement.
Williams’ departure also affected Rams’ offseason plans, but Fisher thinks that the team faced slight troubles early on, but is doing well now. He said:
"We were behind a little bit as we began to install with our players because the offseason program started a couple weeks ago, but we're caught up now."
Williams did issue an apology and was also remorseful, but he will have to do something extraordinary to convince the league to end the punishment.
