St. Louis Rams hire free agent Cortland Finnegan on a five-year, $50 million deal – NFL News
St. Louis Rams have hired former Tennessee Titans’ cornerback, Cortland Finnegan, who was a free agent, on a five-year, $50 million deal.
The agreement, which reportedly was reached on Tuesday, was formally announced by the team on Wednesday, March 14, 2012.
According to different reports, Finnegan will get $27 million guaranteed money while the rest of the amount will be earned over the course of three years.
Finnegan has played under Jeff Fisher, who has recently been appointed as Rams’ head coach. After reuniting with Finnegan, Fisher said:
“We are very, very excited about his future here and what he can do as far as contributing to our defence. I have had a relationship with him, I know him very well and I know he’s going to fit in and be a very fine player for us.”
Finnegan started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2006. In his rookie season, he started two games while playing 16.
However, he played as the regular starter for the Titans from the next season.
In 2010-11 season, which was his best, Finnegan recorded a total of 100 tackles. During the last season, he registered a total of 75 tackles in 16 games of the regular season.
Finnegan is also rated as a dirty player by many because of his aggressive nature of play. However, Fisher was of the view that Finnegan has been misunderstood.
Finnegan has also been involved in different charitable projects and contributes generously to help the poor and needy.
Fisher asserted that the player’s strength on the field as well as his actions off the field will certainly help St. Louis.
Fisher said:
“He’s just a very productive player. The only thing he does better than what he does on the field is what he does off the field in the community. He’ll have a tremendous impact in the community as well. Yeah, he plays with an edge. He challenges and he competes
and he finishes every down.”
Finnegan’s hiring was Rams’ first move in the free agency. They have already traded their second overall pick in the upcoming NFL drafts with Washington Redskins in a blockbuster deal.
Fisher will formally introduce the player during a press conference on Thursday.
