St. Louis Rams improve to defeat Washington Redskins 31-28 – NFL Recap
St. Louis Rams showed an impressive recovery after falling down early against Washington Redskins on Sunday, September 16, 2012, at Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis.
Coming off a defeat in their season opener, Rams did not start the game well in the first quarter, but they came back strongly to outscore the Redskins towards the end of the game to win it 31-28.
This has also raised hopes of fans, who are expecting the team to perform better than last season this year. After getting an early win, it could be anticipated that the Rams would be able to beat their last season’s 2-14 record.
Rams quarterback Sam Bradford again showed a matured performance and if he keeps on grooming himself under supervision of head coach Jeff Fisher, Rams can surprise many teams in the league this season.
Bradford completed 26 passes of 35 attempts for 310 yards while throwing three touchdown passes and one interception.
On the other hand, Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3), who stunned New Orleans Saints in his National Football League (NFL) debut last week, also played well but his efforts were not enough to secure victory for Redskins.
RG3 completed 20 of 29 passes for 206 yards and threw one touchdown pass and an interception. The rookie also got rushing touchdowns. He said after the game:
“They dared us to run and we ran it. We moved the ball and we scored points. We just didn't score enough points.”
Redskins started the game strongly as they got a touchdown in the first minute of the first quarter when Josh Wilson scored a touchdown on a fumble return.
Rams responded by scoring a field goal later, but Redskins increased their lead by scoring another touchdown in the same quarter.
Rams were trailing by 11 points when the first quarter ended, but they did not lose hope and came back sharply in the second quarter in which they got two field goals and a touchdown while Redskins only got a touchdown.
The third quarter saw both teams scoring a touchdown each and the final quarter began with Redskins in lead.
Early in the final quarter, Bradford sent a one-yard pass to Matthew Mulligan for a touchdown that gave the lead to Rams. The move was followed by a successful two-point conversion.
Once Rams got the lead, they did not let it slip and managed to defend well for the entire quarter to beat Redskins. This could be a fresh start for Rams after a disappointing last season. However, there are still many areas where Rams need to work hard.
Their head coach Jeff Fisher said after the game:
“There were so many lessons to be learned tonight, starting with the first offensive play and that’s kind of how the game went. We would have a difficult situation arise on the field and they’d bounce right back.”
