St. Louis Rams satisfied with acquiring Wayne Hunter – NFL News
Although offensive tackle Wayne Hunter was unable to perform well for the New York Jets last season and it eventually became the reason for his trade to St. Louis Rams, his new team’s coach Jeff Fisher considers this as an opportunity for the veteran to
make a fresh start.
Hunter’s departure from New York was imminent as he was recently demoted as well. On the other hand, Jason Smith, the Rams’ first-round pick of the 2009 draft, also needed a fresh start and New York seems a good place for that. His career prospects were
hit by injuries quite early in his National Football League (NFL) career. The Jets seem pretty much satisfied after acquiring services of Smith.
According to the details present on the Rams’ official website, Fisher said of the trade:
“We have been talking to the Jets for a week or so. Things started to pick up and we just felt like it was a good deal for both teams and probably a better deal for both players, a fresh start so we went ahead and we were able to put it together yesterday.”
Rams already have two tackles in Rodger Saffold and Barry Richardson. During the present offseason, Rams gave Smith an opportunity to play on the starting line, but the player reportedly failed to impress the coaches.
Richardson, on the other hand, managed to perform well and got the starting job. Since the Rams already had the starters and Smith’s place was not secure it was better for him to move to the Jets.
Fisher is of the view that Richardson did well to earn the starting role while the coach has also hoped for Smith’s better future. Fisher said:
“Clearly, I think Barry has won that job because of his experience and I wish Jason the best. He did the best he could; he actually really improved this year.”
Rams are coming off a miserable season. Last year they managed to win only two games and lost 14 that eventually resulted in the dismissal of the then head coach and general manager.
Rams have been able to improve this offseason, but their performance during the preseason has not been exceptional. They have lost two of their three preseason games and will play their preseason finale on Thursday against Baltimore Ravens.
