St. Louis Rams satisfied with aggressive approach towards 2012 draft – NFL News
St. Louis Rams are seemingly satisfied with the outcome of the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft in which they selected 10 players as a part of their ongoing rebuilding campaign of the franchise.
Rams started the rebuilding process after the end of the last NFL season in which the team won only two games and lost 14. They ended up at the bottom of the National Football Conference (NFC) West division, and the ownership was forced to dismiss the then
head coach and general manager.
Rams appointed new head coach, Jeff Fisher, and general manager, Les Snead. They both had very limited time to prepare for the draft, but they have done their job well.
Initially, Rams had the second overall pick in the draft and they could have selected a quarterback to improve their offence. However both Snead and Fisher opted against bringing another quarterback and showed faith in Sam Bradford.
Rams traded down their second pick with Washington Redskins who had the sixth overall pick. Redskins also gave Rams another pick in the draft.
Just before the draft, Rams further traded their pick down and gave the sixth overall pick to Dallas Cowboys who had the 14th overall pick.
During the three-day draft, Rams selected LSU’s defensive tackle, Michael Brockers (first-round, 14th overall pick), Appalachian State’s receiver, Brian Quick (second-round, 33rd overall pick), North Alabama’s cornerback, Janoris Jenkins
(second-round, 39th overall pick), Cincinnati’s running back, Isaiah Pead (second-round, 50th overall pick) and Montana’s cornerback, Trumaine Johnson (third-round, 65th overall pick).
Furthermore, they also drafted Wake Forest’s wide receiver, Chris Givens (fourth-round 96th overall pick), South Carolina’s guard, Rokevious Watkins (fifth-round, 150th overall pick), Missouri’s kicker, Greg Zuerlein (sixth-round, 171st
overall pick), Hawaii’s linebacker, Aaron Brown (seventh-round, 209th pick) and Abilene Christian’s running back, Daryl Richardson (seventh-round, 252nd pick).
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Fisher thinks that trading the picks down helped the Rams acquire more players to fill the roster.
Fisher said:
“This is the one that we are going to be remembered for, in particular because of what we were able to do when we jumped out of the two-spot. At two, you don’t know what’s going to happen but when you get to go down to six and pick up more picks and then
continue to pick up more picks, it allows us to get more good players.”
With the completion of the selection process, Rams are now turning their focus towards their offseason activities in which they are going to evaluate all their players.
